A report titled “Ecosystem Restoration and Conservation for Resilient Livelihoods in the Rupa Lake Watershed of Nepal” was jointly released by UNEP-IEMP and the Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD) of Nepal in July 2020.

This report presents findings of a case study of the impact of recent major initiatives and projects implemented for ecosystem restoration and conservation on local livelihoods in Rupa Lake watershed area in Nepal, following the conceptual framework of ‘Climate, Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CEL)’ nexus, and assesses the suitability of Rupa watershed experience for replication more widely.

Nepal is one of the four Asia-Pacific counties selected for the case study on ecosystem conservation and livelihood improvement in rural areas UNEP-IEMP has initiated under its CEL flagship programme. The CEL programme is a major initiative led by UNEP-IEMP and supported by China and other developing countries to promote long-term South-South cooperation. The programme aims to assist the developing countries in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate targets while protecting the ecosystems and improving rural livelihoods.

The case study was co-executed by LI-BIRD - a non-governmental organization committed to diversifying choices and securing livelihoods of smallholder farmers through innovative approaches to research and development in agriculture, biodiversity, climate change and natural resources. The financial support for this case study was provided by UNEP-IEMP through the Pan-Third Pole Environment Study for a Green Silk Road (Pan-TPE), a strategic priority research programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (XDA20010303).
