Dr. Chao Fu is the Head of Research Unit of UNEP-IEMP. He is responsible for coordinating cross-cutting research activities so as to provide technical support to the implementation of the flagship programme on Climate, Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CEL). He also serves as an assistant professor at the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was the post-doctoral research fellow (2011-2014) at the IGSNRR, where he assisted in the inception and development of UNEP-IEMP.

His research interests include many topics related to ecosystem management practices and policies, such as ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation, carbon stocks of terrestrial ecosystems, greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land uses, and sustainable management of protected areas.

In recent five years, he has facilitated a total of 7 research tasks in key international cooperation projects with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Fund of China, and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also served as an international specialist of the “Ecosystem-based Adaptation through South-South Cooperation” funded by the Global Environment Facility. He has co-authored with UNEP-IEMP researchers 15 papers in international journals.

He earned his Ph.D in Ecology from CAS in 2011 and Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences from Renmin University of China in 2005.
