From 2008 to 2012, she worked as a visiting scholar and postdoc research fellow at the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology, University of Oklahoma, USA. Her research interests include, but not limited to, global change and terrestrial ecosystem. By using global change manipulative experiments and data synthesis, she studied biodiversity and ecosystem carbon, nitrogen and water cycles in response to climate change and human disturbance. Her study comprehensively revealed the regulation mechanisms of climate-carbon cycle feedback. Dr. Niu has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, which have been cited over 22,000 times with an H index of 79.
