Abstract

Governments and industries increasingly use biomass to reduce reliance on fossil resources. Yet renewable feedstocks do not guarantee sustainability. Environmental and social outcomes depend on how those resources are produced, processed, traded and recovered. Expansion can increase pressure on land, water and biodiversity, while rural producers often bear the costs.

This report, Advancing the Bioeconomy: Synergistic Transformation in Key Agro-Industrial Sectors, examines bamboo, palm oil, natural rubber and duckweed. The cases span resource types and levels of industrial maturity, from engineered materials and established plantation commodities to aquatic systems combining protein production with wastewater treatment. Each chapter considers policy and technology alongside land use, biodiversity, climate and livelihoods.

Durable bamboo products can retain carbon, though intensive plantations may reduce forest diversity and increase water demand. Palm oil and natural rubber support millions of rural households, but deforestation, pollution from processing, limited traceability and compliance costs weigh on their supply chains. Duckweed can recover nutrients from wastewater and produce protein without arable land, although regulation and commercial systems are still developing.

The report identifies priorities: raising yields on existing plantations, diversifying production landscapes, helping smallholders meet compliance requirements, and turning residues into materials and energy. Safeguards are needed as aquatic cultivation expands. The aim is more efficient biomass use, less pressure on ecosystems and a fairer distribution of benefits along the value chain.
